OPEN WATER I
Classes are taught using the following format. The class will meet two weekend on both Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's schedule is normally 7:00am till 7pm with time in the classroom and in the pool. We do break for lunch. Sunday's schedule is normally 12:00noon till 6pm with time in the classroom and in the pool.
The total course, classroom and pool time, is 32 hours. We offer longer courses than those offered by other agencies because we believe, "More education leads to safer divers."
Missed Sessions
If a student misses a session, they may complete a make-up session on arrangement with the instructor. If several sessions are missed, the student may make up those at the next class. There is no additional charge for make-up sessions.
Open Water Dives
At the end of the classroom and pool sessions, the students will be ready to complete the training for certification with the required open water dives. The requirements include one skin dive (with mask, fins, and snorkel) and four SCUBA dives. By YMCA standards, no more than two SCUBA dives may be performed in one day, so a minimum of two days is required. These required dives can be accomplished on any of the dive trips offered by Tropical Breeze Diving, LLC; we offer local outings, weekend trips to Florida, and week long diving vacations at a resort in places like the Bahamas, Bonaire or many others!
DIVE REFRESHER CLASS
Have you forgotten what you learned in your open water class? Has it been awhile since you went diving? Well, you're not alone. Without regular diving, many people can't recall what their instructor looked like, let alone what they were taught. If you don't use those skills often, they diminish quickly. So the Dive Refresher Course is designed to get you back up to speed. We focus on those skills that you may have forgotten over time. We will review Dive Tables, Medical, Physics and Dive Planning. We then refresh your water skills with a series of in water exercises to improve your diving skills. The course also reminds you why diving is so much fun.
SCUBA Lifesaving and Accident Management
The YMCA's Diver Rescue Course is called SCUBA Lifesaving and Accident Management (SLAM). This name emphasizes the dual focus of the course. This course teaches SLAM through CARE.
Cognizance - recognition of potential problems and resources available to prevent or solve a problem.
Assessment - evaluation of potential problems and situations before selecting a course of action.
Rescue - the physical or verbal actions taken to prevent or minimize injury
Evacuation - all of the management that must occur after a rescue has been made.
The course starts with a Friday evening lecture. Most of Saturday is spent at the pool for in-water and pool side practice of rescue skills and accident management procedures.
Sunday is a quarry day where all skills are practiced and accident situations are simulated.
DIVEMASTER
A certified YMCA Divemaster provides on-site leadership for groups of certified divers during recreational sport diving or for students during training under the direct supervision of the YMCA SCUBA Instructor. Divemasters conduct tours and supervise diving activities. Divemasters can work at dive resorts, on dive boats and in dive shops all over the world.
Divemaster training can be provided through the program following completion of Open Water dive certification, SLAM, CPR, First Aid and Oxygen administration; all of which are available through the YMCA SCUBA Program
ASSISTANT INSTRUCTOR
YMCA Assistant Instructor certification is a required step in the development toward YMCA SCUBA Instructor. Assistant Instructors may teach the YMCA Snorkeling and Skin Diving courses. During the Open Water course, Assistant Instructors assist in classroom training, pool training and the open water dives under the direct supervision of the Instructor.
Assistant Instructor training is available following completion of the Divemaster training and certification
