YMCA SCUBA Instructor Training in Middle Tennessee

The YMCA SCUBA Program has a three step leadership training sequence which leads to SCUBA Instructor. Each of these Leadership courses follows the same outline regardless of where it is offered. Candidates may then attend Leadership courses different locations. Please visit the YMCA SCUBA Headquarters site for a complete list of Leadership courses world wide.

Instructor Crossover from another agency consists of a pre-institute review of credentials and a two day evaluation of knowledge and teaching skills. Much of the time is spent learning those aspects of SCUBA instruction that may be unique to the YMCA.

Overview of the YMCA Leadership Training Sequence
Divemaster

The YMCA Divemaster course This phase provides you with advanced diving information, information about the YMCA SCUBA Program, and information about the additional requirements and preparation required for additional leadership training.

A pool session will review basic pool skills and preview the pool skills and pool teaching requirements for the other phases.

As part of your review the following text is recommended:

Diving Fundamentals for Leadership

Assistant Instructor

This will focus on teaching techniques. Institute staff will present lectures on teaching techniques and discuss "how to teach" various subjects at the entry level course.

Your diving knowledge will tested with a written exam, and your presentation technique will be evaluated when you give a short talk typical of an entry level course. An openwater session will evaluate your ability to rescue a diver and conduct a tour dive as an Assistant Instructor may be called upon to do during a checkout dive.

This prepares you to take a more active role in the training of SCUBA students while working with a SCUBA Instructor. You may also gain experience by teaching the YMCA Safe Snorkeling and Skin Diving courses.

Instructor Institute

What you have learned during previous course work, the teaching experience you have gained as an Assistant Instructor, and your additional study and preparation, are evaluated during this weekend.

You will take several written exams, be evaluated on your classroom and pool teaching techniques, demonstrate proficiency in pool and openwater skills, and conduct a mock openwater checkout dive with staff playing the role of your students.

Additional staff lectures will cover the administrative aspects of being a YMCA SCUBA Instructor.
